Within my work, I want to raise awareness of what is experienced during Alzheimer’s. This is primarily based around addressing misconceptions surrounding the disease, like the idea that we are supposed to grow out of needing help, which leads us to grudgingly look after the old, and people with Alzheimer’s aren’t trying hard enough. I have used my family’s own experience of Alzheimer’s, using old family photos and interviews with family members, to create a series of paintings and text pieces that document the process of loss associated with the disease: the loss of memory, the loss of language, and the loss of self that is experienced by people suffering with Alzheimer’s. I have mainly explored this through the text, and the use of asemic writing, in order to confuse and frustrate the audience, and mimic the symptoms of the disease.
